Chicago!!!

Two weekends ago I had the wonderful opportunity to visit my friend Chelsea in the beautiful city of Chicago, Illinois. I spent three glorious days in the Windy City eating and drinking my way through the amazing city, while soaking up the amazing architecture in this metropolis that 9.5 million people call home (2.7 million in the greater Chicago area).

Chicago, the third most populous area in the USA, was founded in 1780 and officially was recognized as a city in 1837. Chicago had a spectacular fire in 1871 which destroyed many homes and left over 100,000 people homeless. This didn’t stop the city from rebuilding and by 1900 the construction boom and population influx left the city as being the fifth most populous city in the world at the turn of the 20th century.

Chicago is now an international hub for finance, culture, commerce, industry, technology, communications, and transportation. It also is a massive destination for tourism, with over 58 million visitors annually!

Below is a handful of the photographs that I took on my weekends adventures with Chelsea. I also had the wonderful opportunity to meet many of her friends while I was there.

Buller Pass Hike

On August 3rd 2019 my friend Carissa and I completed the Buller Pass hike in Spray Valley Provincial Park. It’s a 10.1km out & back style hike with 778 metres of elevation gain. The majority of the elevation gain is at the end, but the views are worth it. It took us about 6 hours to complete this amazing hike. The hike starts out in a heavily tree’d forest and eventually breaks through to some meadows before getting into some more burnt out tree’s from a forest fire from 2011/2012. After passing through those trees you come to the pass, which is about 250 metres of elevation gain, and it definitely makes you work for it. The loose shale makes it difficult to gain much traction. After reaching the peak you can see the beautiful view of Ribbon Lake below. We had some lunch at the top before turning back towards the car. I highly recommend this amazing hike!

Wings Over Springbank Air Show 2019

On Saturday July 27th 2019 I went to the Wings Over Springbank Air Show for the first time. My friends Hadrian, Nick, and his girlfriend Heather attended. The biennial airshow was celebrating Springbank Airport’s 50th anniversary. The Canadian Snowbirds,a CF-18 Fighter Jet, Brent Handy & Todd Ferrell (each in a Pitts Special), P40 Kittyhawk, P47 Thunderbolt, and Team Rocket (Ken Fowler & Eric Hansen), as well a female pilot I didn’t catch the name of (in a Vans RV-6) attended. A ground display of the reconstruction of the Avro Aero 2 was also present. Sadly some of the displays were cut short on the Saturday showing due to a storm that rolled on in. The show was cancelled early at about 2:30pm. Hadrian ended up going back on the Sunday, but I wasn’t able to attend. I still managed to get some great photos.

Peter Lougheed Provincial Park

This past weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to go for a nice Sunday drive with my friend Brenda. Brenda and I met just over a year ago on a Grizzly Bear Tour done by Classic Canadian Tours. I had the wonderful opportunity to go on this tour with my mom and happened to meet Brenda on the tour. I highly recommend Classic Canadian Tours for once in a lifetime handcrafted Canadian experiences. You can check out their tours on their website here. You can see my blog post about that trip here.

Since then we also went on another Classic Canadian Tours trip to see Polar bears in Churchill (also with my mom). You can see my blog post about that trip here:

Fast forward to last weekend when we decided to go for a drive in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. We drove over 300 kilometers looking for wildlife, but unfortunately had no luck finding any wildlife. We did manage to get some fantastic landscape photos though. I was testing out a new camera, a Canon EOS R, to potentially replace my aging Canon 1DX, but the camera has some shortfalls so I will be hanging onto my Canon 1DX for the perceivable future.

After our road trip we stopped for a beer at Hard Knox Brewery in Black Diamond. I had a delicious IPA and Brenda had a Honey Brown Ale.

Check back next weekend when I head on a weekend getaway to Jasper with my girlfriend.

Sulphur Mountain Hike

Last weekend I went on a wonderful hike up Sulphur Mountain in Banff National Park with my friend Hadrian Robinson. It’s a moderate hike with 744 metres of elevation gain and 11km round-trip. The weather was perfect and we couldn’t have had a better day. Check out Hadrian’s wonderful photography on his Instagram account @hadrianrobinsonphotography. Here’s some of my photos from our hike!

Quebec & Montreal

The week after returning from my Boston & New York trip I had the opportunity to go on a trip to Quebec & Montreal for my birthday. Work was a bit slow still and I approached my boss and asked if I could go away for another week, and he said go for it. I found a steal of a deal for $700 for flights to/from YYC to YUL (Air Canada), hotels in both Quebec and Montreal, and Via rail to/from Quebec/Montreal. Not bad for easter weekend!

I was blown away by the sheer beauty of Quebec and Montreal. I’ve been wanting to go here for years but hadn’t got around to it.

In Montreal I met up with my friend Myriam, who I had met earlier this year on my trip to Hawaii. We had some of the most amazing poutine I’ve ever had in my life! I even met some new friends while at a brewery in Montreal, who I still maintain contact with. One of them even lives here in Calgary.

Take a look at my pictures below and see the amazing beauty of both these amazing cities.
