2018-05-22 – US Route 66 Day 6

Today we drove 230 miles from Clinton, Oklahoma to Vega, Texas. We ended up staying at The Days Inn. We saw the following sights today:

  • Water Hole Mural & Tumbleweed Grill, Texola. We had food here. Dad had Liver & Onions, and I had a Jalapeno Burger with Homemade Fries. Masel, the wonderful woman who owned the place, cooked us lunch and told us stories of her purchasing the place, fixing it up, and expanding it. She also purchased the bar next door and is going to fix it up.
  • Hot Rods Pizza, Shamrock
  • Big Verns Steakhouse, Shamrock
  • Conoco Tower Station and U Drop Inn, Shamrock. This beautiful gas station. Built in 1936 by J. M. Tindall and R. C. Lewis at the cost of $23,000. With its Art Deco detailing and two towers, the building was designed and constructed to be three separate structures. The first was the Tower Conoco Station, named for the dominating four-sided obelisk rising from the flat roof and topped by a metal tulip. The second was the U-Drop Inn Café, which got its name from a local schooolboy’s winning entry in a naming contest. The third structure was supposed to be a retail store that instead became an overflow seating area for the café.

2018-05-19 – US Route 66 Day 3

Today we drove 156 miles from St. Louis, Illinois to St. Robert, Missouri. We ended up staying at Studio Z, a pretty swanky chic hotel in St. Robert for only $60 per night. We ended up having a beer in the bar and chatting with the woman running the hotel. We saw the following sights today:

  • Missouri Hick BBQ, Cuba. Dad had St. Louis Ribs with Mustard Potato Salad and Baked Beans. I had a Brisket Sandwich with Salad.
  • Wagon Wheel Motel, Cuba
  • World’s 2nd Largest Rocking Chari, Fanning
  • Mule Trading Post, St. James.
  • Stonehenge Replica, Rolla

2018-05-18 – US Route 66 Day 2

Today we drove from Dwight, Illinois to St. Louis Illinois. We drove a total distance of 257 miles today and saw the following items (listed below) before visiting a bottle shop in downtown St. Louis called Saint Louis Hop Shop. I purchased about a dozen IPA’s too consume for the remainder of the trip. We headed back to the hotel for the night.

  • Ambler’s Texaco, Dwight. We met a guy here named Jack who also showed us around town. There was also an old bank designed by Frank Lloyd Wright; one of my favorite architects, as well as an old train station, and the Fox Development Center for the handicapped and mentally ill.
  • Mobil 1 Station, Odell
  • 1932 Standard Oil Gas Station, Odell
  • Meramex Signs and Rustic Barns, Cayuga
  • Old Labin Inn, Pontiac
  • Octane 66, Pontiac
  • Livingston County Court House, Pontiac
  • Oakland Auto Museum, Pontiac

  • Beer Nut Factory, Bloomington. We purchased some beer nuts from here.
  • Arcadia Video Games, Mclean. This place was closed but we still got a photo of the outside and inside.
  • Downey Building, Atlanta
  • Paul Bunyan Statue, Atlanta
  • Palm Grill Café, Atlanta. We ate here. My dad has the Palm’s Burger with Chips. I had the Spicy & Smoky Burger with Chips.
  • Railsplitter Covered Wagon, Lincoln
  • Postville Courthouse, Lincoln
  • Lincoln City Hall, Lincoln
  • Pig Hip Restaurant Sign, Broadwell
  • Illinois State Capital, Springfield
  •  Cozy Dog Drive In, Springfield. We tried one of their “cozy” dogs… It was gross.
  • Arts Restaurant and Motel, Farmersville
  • Belvidere Motel, Litchfield. The motel is no longer open. It went bankrupt back in 2015.
  • Soulsby Service Station, Olive
  • Henry’s Rabbit Ranch, Staunton
